Chapter Seven

“Cayenne, huh?”

They were sitting at a local McDonald’s, enjoying a fast meal after leaving Madame Babala’s house. Cyn had listened intently as Chance reconstructed their entire relationship. A relationship that had hinged on sex and one particular word.

He stuck a fry into some ketchup, then popped it into his mouth. “Amazing how much trouble one little word can cause.”

She felt comfortable with him, despite everything that had happened. She also found that she liked looking at him. He was handsome, in a rugged outdoorsy sort of way. She’d never had a particular thing for cowboys, but she liked this cowboy. If she’d had to pick a husband to spend the rest of her life with, she could’ve done a lot worse than Chance.

“So,” he said now, after finishing off his Quarter Pounder, “when do you want to head back to the ranch?”

She sensed that he wanted to get back to work, back to the world he knew. She also had the feeling that he was proud of his ranch and wanted to show it to her. There were so many questions she wanted to ask him, chief among them being whether he was happy—really happy—about their coming baby.

Cyn sighed and took a sip of her Coke. She’d have plenty of time to ask him all the questions she wanted once they were living in Wyoming, out in the middle of nowhere. That is, if she had the nerve.

It scared her, this move out to the ranch. She wasn’t exactly what one called a happy camper. She’d never been that athletic, and her idea of camping always included air-conditioning and room service. This matchup with Chance had been orchestrated entirely by fate, with a huge helping hand from Madame Babala. She wondered if, had she met him in any normal fashion, they would’ve dated for a while and then moved on.

The baby made that speculation impossible.

She sighed again, then glanced away from his knowing gaze. Well, people have started marriages with a whole lot less than what they had. The one thought that gave her the most comfort was the fact that Chance, at heart, seemed like a good man. She knew he would never physically hurt her. She wasn’t so sure what effect he’d eventually have on her heart.

“I’d like to go to my doctor for a checkup—”

“Absolutely. I’ll go with you.”

She had to smile at how doggedly protective he was of her.

“Maybe he knows someone out in your area—”

“Eunice will know. I can call her tonight if that would make you feel better.”

She already knew that Eunice was his cook and housekeeper, and that Cookie had been working on the ranch forever. When Chance and his cousin, Mark, had bought the place, they hadn’t had the heart to ask him to leave.

“Yeah, it would.” She swallowed against the sudden emotion that leapt into her throat. “And I’d like to try to talk with my sister.”

Chance nodded his head. “We could go over there tonight.”

Cyn stared at the food on the plastic tray between them.
